Returning for its fifth year, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, tells the retro Christmas yarn about Martians kidnapping Santa Claus to cheer up the sad, listless children of Mars. Based on the cheesy sixties film with its corny lines, scenery-chewing performances and fake-loooking robot, these Martians promise a slapstick, B-movie antidote to the typical holiday show.

In this Pulitzer and Tony-nominated comedy by Craig Lucas, a whirlwind romance and marriage takes a startling turn when an mysterious old man congratulates the bride with a kiss. With this kiss, Rita (the bride) and the man have what could be described as a Twilight Zone moment that sends Rita and her would-be husband on a mysterious journey, as they test the true strength of their love, beyond the surface connections that first drew them to one another. Prelude to a Kiss was commissioned and originally staged by South Coast Repertory in January 1988. The play later went on to Broadway and was made into a feature film starring Alec Baldwin and Meg Ryan. Staged Cinema Productions' performance of the play is directed by David Chorley. Learn More

  • on What to Wear
For the matinee we attended, dress was very informal
  • on Where to Eat
There is a small bar with a decent beer selection, wine and small snacks.
  • on What to Wear
Can be informal but it's nice enough that you can dress up a bit and not feel over dressed.

This is a great little theater that produces surprising good plays with rich sets and costumes. Santa Conquers the Martians in style and humor that is fun for the whole family but not strictly for kids. Based on one of the worst movies ever made is one of the funnest little plays ever made. It will definitely put you in the Christmas spirit!

The production of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians was funny, well acted and creative. Our entire party had a wonderful time. It was nice to see this camp movie come alive on stage. The cast showed humor and great comic timing while performing. I think we may make this a yearly ritual!

Quotes & Highlights

  • "Attention, all alterna-parents: your Christmas wish has been answered. This year, your inner conflict of how to expose your child to mainstream holiday classics yet not subject yourself to a grueling rehash of A Christmas Carol or a Nutcracker enema is resolved: Take them to Santa Claus Conquers the Martians." --OC Weekly

Description

Adapted to the stage by Brian Newell, Nick McGee & Jay Lewis
Directed by Brian Newell

The Maverick Theater, in its quest to perform cinema on stage, has pulled from the vaults a Christmas tale that only Hollywood could have conceived. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is so ridiculous and so absurd it’s entertaining. The children of Mars are not sleeping and eating. Consulting an ancient Martian sage, the Martian leaders are advised that the children are rebelling due to the society's overly rigid structure that does not allow children to play. The only way to help the children is to allow them to have toys. To do this, they need a Santa Claus. The Martian leaders decide to kidnap Santa Claus and bring him to Mars to make toys for the children.

The production captures all the hokey B-movie elements such as costumes, set pieces and the corny character portrayals. The show is suitable for kids 5 and up and adults will enjoy the SNL style of the performances.
