Peter Morgan's Tony Award-nominated play that spawned the critically acclaimed 2006 film pits jet-setting British TV talk-show host David Frost against disgraced former president Richard Nixon in a battle of wits and wills. Desperate to regain his slipped standing as a serious journalist, Frost seeks to elicit from the Watergate-plagued Nixon a detailed explanation and apology, while the ever-political former president has his own agenda. This fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the famous 1977 series of interviews dissects the electrifying battle between Nixon and Frost, revealing both mens insecurities, ego and sense of dignity as they face off in a historic encounter that ultimately changes them both. Great show. The actors were wonderful, especially the actors playing Bilbo Baggins and Gollum. The production was imaginatively staged and the props(puppets) were fantistic. The small, intimate theater made you feel a part of the action. I highly recommed this production.

This is a great show - we had front row center seats which had us flinching during a sword-fight scene (bring your safety glasses!
The imaginative props were great. The guy that played Gollum was amazing. All very good.

Another fine production by this small theater. Very inovative and good acting. The theater was a bit warm the day I was there, but it was a full house and a very hot day outside so the air conditioner had its work cut out for it.

Another excellent production at The Maverick. Very imaginative puppetry and the acting was wonderful and great casting. Quite an ambitious production and with the intimate theatre, the audience was really caught up in the drama.

Description

Directed by Nathan Makaryk

The Maverick Theatre is bringing to the stage The Hobbit, the enchanting first installment of J.R.R. Tolkien’s middle earth saga (and prelude to The Lord of the Rings). Director Nathan Makaryk’s inspired use of visual effects produces mammoth creatures within touch of the audience, and maintains the high-stakes tone for title character Bilbo Baggins’ journey across Middle Earth.

The Hobbit follows the dwarves’ quest to take back their gold and silver, stolen by the menacing dragon, Smaug. Bilbo, a simple, timid hobbit is recruited as official burglar by the wizard Gandalf. Along their way, they encounter fantastical and daunting enemies, as well as run-ins with unexpected rivals. And Bilbo Baggins’ discovery of a magic ring paves the way for the epic adventure yet to come. Using all elements of theatrics and stage combat, director Makaryk heaps a pulsing plenty of edge-of-your-seat action into the audience.
