STAGEStheatre (Fullerton, CA)
One of Shakespeare's most famous plays, this dark comedy is a timeless exploration of greed, racism and the abuse of power. A merchant, Antonio, wants to help his friend Bassanio win the hand of the rich, young Portia, so Antonio borrows money from Shylock. This is a daring choice for a company to perform during the Jewish High Holidays. However, Joe Parish's direction and performance and Shylock shows deep compassion and empathy for the Merchant of Venice and the plight of Jews during this era. I was apprehensive, but left with appreciation.
Fine Production.

A prettty good show.

Another winner for Stages. I plan to attend again and take a friend.
Stages staff are all warm and friendly and makes you feel welcome.
Don't miss this well done classic.

This production of the Merchant of Venice was excellent. The venue is small and intimate and the performance is true to the original Shakespeare piece. The performance moves along at a nice pace and lets the audience feel a wide range of emotions throughout the play.
The venue is in a strip mall in Fullerton but don't let the outside fool you, once you walk through the doors you will know you are in a legitimate theatre setting.

What a fine show! The acting was great and we really appreciated the introduction which placed the play's painful anti-Semitism in the context of the time. We brought our two teen-agers with us and they were mesmerized the entire time. This was the first full-length Shakespearean drama we have brought them to, and we were gratified when our 13-year-old said "Who could think Shakespeare is boring?" We were also glad to find this small, local theater we had never seen before.

Great play! Very passionate and intense. Nice, intimate venue. The actors and director brought Shakespeare alive so that today's people can understand it.

The actor who played Shylock was outstanding, as was Antonio in the courtroom scene. It was very nice intimate but professional show.

The play was well acted.

Though the production is small but the actors and director did wonderful job to bring Shakespeare alive .

This show at 6pm on a Saturday night was the first of 2 shows that night. Perhaps it was the time, or perhaps some of the actors were concerned about their stamina, but nonetheless, several key roles were low in energy and volume. Not a bad space, visually, but there are leg-room issues if you're tall. All in all, I'd see another show here.

I WAS AMAZED. THE ACTING WAS SUPERB!!!BRAVO

Great theater and great performance, definitely would want to go here again.

The play was exceptionally well done. I especially enjoyed Portia's suitor from Arragon. I will definitely return to the STAGEStheatre for more productions.
Antonio, a merchant of Venice, needs ready cash to help his young friend court the rich and beautiful Portia. He goes to Shylock, a Jewish money lender who offers him a strange bargain: He will lend him the money, but his collateral is a pound of Antonio’s flesh! When the note comes due, Shylock demands his pound of flesh in one of the theatre’s most renowned and tension-filled courtroom scenes.
In Shylock, Shakespeare created a notorious yet surprisingly sympathetic villain confronting the anti-Semitism of his time. As the controversial moneylender demands his pound of flesh, this poetic tale explores the issues of prejudice, intolerance, faith and personal identity -- themes that still resonate today.
