A landmark Canadian drama, the surprisingly funny and tender yet tough two-act The Drawer Boy comes to McAninch Arts Center in this Buffalo Theatre Ensemble production. With a focus on the transformative power of storytelling and an eye toward the recent history of Canadian alternative theater, The Drawer Boy follows a young actor from the city sent to research life on a farm for an upcoming role. In the process, the actor unwittingly makes a discovery that threatens to upend the lives of the two older men who own the farm. Ensemble member Kurt Naebig directs the show, which was penned by award-winning Canadian playwright Michael Healey (Plan B, Rune Arlidge).

By the Way, Meet Vera Stark: Sly Satire Skewers Hollywood Racism

Full Price:
$43.00 - $55.00
Our Price:
$21.50 - $27.50

Set in Hollywood over a 70-year period, Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage's pseudo-biographical comedy By the Way, Meet Vera Stark follows the life of a headstrong African-American actress who begins a career in the 1930s, at a time when her only shot at success lay in stealing small scenes in big Hollywood blockbusters. Seventy years later, film buffs reflect on the life and legacy of the controversial star, whose eventual fame and fortune came at the price of perpetuating dangerous stereotypes. Nottage artfully blends comedy and social commentary for a thoroughly entertaining yet thought-provoking picture of the cultural climate that shaped Vera Stark. Clever and illuminating, this show draws on screwball films of the 1930s and uses today's fascination with celebrity and controversy to get to the truth behind the legend, and reflect on who she might have been if she'd lived in a different time. What a wonderful evening. the cast was outstanding, especially Jonathan Kraft who played Morgan. His performance was both nuanced and truthful. I hope I see more of him. If the run hasn't completed, I would highly recommend seeing this.
