William Shakespeare's Romantic Comedy As You Like It
Writers' Theatre (Glencoe, IL)
Rated 3.7 by 13 members who went.
A courtship with a twist, a duke and his merry men in exile, a melancholic wit, a clown and a lovesick shepherd and the shepherdess who spurns him all swirl together in a wildly beautiful romp through the magical Forest of Arden. Shakespeare brings to life some of the most romantic and charming scenes ever to be scribed in this most perfect of comedies.

I can't remember ever seeing this play before and now I know why...I have a vague recollection of reading it in high school, and remember "diddle diddle dee-ing" when there were little songs in it.
If this had been a musical, it could have been wonderful, as the actors had many fine musical qualities.
The contemporary costumes were great, the set excellent and the acting competent. But the play was NOT the thing!
My companion enjoyed the show more than I did, but again, attributed to all the qualities EXCEPT the play itself. When they hypothesize that Will Shakespeare did not write all of his plays, I can accept that this could have been done by another...yes, there are many signature Shakespeare witticisms and word play.
I hope that you, the reader of this review, will find it "as you like it" more than I did!

Edit the above to We Loved It or count the I twice. We knew most of the cast and the director before hand, the reviews had been glowing, and the performance was even better than we had been lead to believe.

I did love it, so I bought tickets for 2 sons-aged 22 and 28...they liked it, and I found that they were discussing it later....which means they were thinking about it!

wonderful to see it at Writers Theater's intimate space. So appreciated the clear, fluid enunciation of Shakespearean lines. Several local favorites in the cast.
