Had a great time at the historic Alex Theater. The film and print was great. The composed score for the silent film was perfect. Best part of the day for me was seeing Lon Chaney's make-up kit from the 1920's. It was next to a publicity picture from the 1920's with Chaney holding the same kit. You could see that some of the stuff in the pic was in the kit still today. Too cool.Written on Sep 19 2011

Great movie and accompaniment. Excellent venue. Spoiled by overly-long introductory lecture. Tedious presentation, self-absorbed speakers with zero charisma, took and hour and change to deliver information that could have been summed up in ten minutes. I'm a movie-geek but this lecture was bloated and lack-lustre to say the least. My civillian (non-movie-geek) companion was really suffering through the pre-amble.Written on Dec 05 2011

Description
Lon Chaney stars as a deformed criminal mastermind who plans to loot and pillage San Francisco while revenging himself on the doctor who mistakenly amputated his legs. Not a film for the faint of heart (or young children), it is part gangster film, part psychological drama. Forget Phantom and Hunchback and see Chaney at his best in The Penalty.
Parents, leave the kids at home for this one.
