The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra presents illumination, a program with guest soprano Karina Gauvin, who will be singing a pair of poetic works by Benjamin Britten. Britten's evocative Les illuminations is based on the passionate poetry of Arthur Rimbaud, while the sweeping Now sleeps the crimson petal is a setting of a Tennyson poem. Conducted by Jeffrey Kahane, the concert concludes with Beethoven's famed Symphony No. 3, known as "Eroica." The Orchestra commemorates the 170th anniversary of Dvorak's birth by opening the concert with one of his nocturnes.

Dvorak: Nocturne in B major, Op. 40
Britten: Les illuminations
Britten: Now sleeps the crimson petal
Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major

Jim Morrison shared a unique creative idol with Benjamin Britten: the infamous French poet Arthur Rimbaud. In Britten’s evocative Les illuminations, Karina Gauvin brings the luscious words of Rimbaud to vivid life, demonstrating the passion France’s enfant terrible still inspires. This night of sweeping imagery also showcases Gauvin’s “warmly supple soprano” (The Times, London) in Britten’s interpretation of Tennyson’s Now sleeps the crimson petal.

Bookended by a Dvorak orchestral gem and Beethoven’s dramatic “Eroica” Symphony, the landmark work that ushered in the Romantic period, the program beckons you to surrender to an evening of passion and reflection.

The concert is part of the nationwide Mutual Inspirations Festival presented by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in honor of the 170th birthday of composer Antonin Dvorak and the international Daniel Pearl World Music Days.
