James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, Screening at the Alex Theatre

Full Price:

See the immortal James Dean on the big screen as the original rebellious teen in Nicholas Ray's classic 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause. Dean's iconic role as Jim Stark personifies American's cultural image of the high school loner with his slicked-back hair, pouting red lips and slouching in a white T-shirt and blue jeans. In the film, Dean's character bonds with classmates played by Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo (who both earned Academy Award nominations for their supporting roles) to battle school bullies. Learn More

Another awesone night at the Alex Theater. You can't do better than the Marx Brothers and "A Day at the Races." Featured guests included Groucho's pretty granddaughter and Gummo's grandson. Also speaking before the film was a 90 year old extra (who looks 50) who had sang and danced in the classic. Side note: he sat in front of me during the movie and gave commentary throughout the film...and I wasn't bothered at all! Happy for the insight. One more side note: the Alex staff is terrific...friendly and very serving. Final side note: for a couple bucks you can buy a raffle ticket: I won a day at Santa Anita and VIP valet parking. Giddy up!

This event receives a 4 plus - great to see a wonderful classic with so much talent within the movie itself! The talent displayed in this movie made "America's Got Talent" look like an elementary school act. The Cartoon was one of the best I've seen in a long time, & the Newsreel brought back memories of my younger days when we saw one every time we attended a movie house. Wonderful event to attend - I look forward to more of these in the future.

Free tickets(thanks Goldstar) + Marx Brothers + Alex Theatre + winning 4 Free tickets to a future Alex Film Society Screening. Really, you can't go wrong with this equation. Fun film, great theatre, perfect seats. The afternoon show didn't have all the bells and whistles mentioned in other reviews for the evening show, but still an entertaining experience.

"A Day at the Races" and the Alex Theatre -- a classic within a classic! Pre-show, the audience enjoyed a Chico-hatted pianist cheerfully performing music from various Marx Brothers movies. Then we were treated with live special guests, including Groucho's grand-daughter, Gummo's grandson, grandson of the actor who did the splits in the musical finale of the film, and Lenny Bluett, 91, who was in this 1937 movie as a fiddle player in two of the musical numbers. (The colorfully-dressed Mr. Bluett was very kind to pose with my husband and me for pictures.) The guests left the stage and next up were a newsreel from 1937 and a Bugs Bunny cartoon that featured a Marx Brothers cameo. We were already laughing when the main attraction, "A Day at the Races" began. OK, this movie is not as strong as, say, "A Night at the Opera," but it has its classic moments, my favorite probably being the hiularious "tootsie-fruitsie ice cream" scene. I've seen this movie many times on a small screen, but enjoyed it so much more on the big screen at the beautiful Alex Theatre.
