I fell in love with the Scarlet Pimpernel because of the music, which, until this production, I had only ever heard on the concept album. The Glendale Centre Theatre delivered that glorious music with tremendous flair and gave it something I had missed out on for six years - life.

While all three leads gave strong performances, our hero Percy really stole the show with his riotously funny, over-the-top, oft-improvised droll fop humor. He effortlessly poured out all the anguish, excitement, and passion in every song, pulling me deeper into the narrative. Marguerite could have projected a more vivacious personality, especially with the removal of the song "Vivez." The only time I saw her shine on stage was in the reprisal of "Storybook," where in a flurry of skirt flinging and foot-stomping, I could really feel her fire. Her French accent, while unnecessary, was not altogether annoying. As for Chauvelin, past a moment of panic during "Falcon in the Dive," I felt very pleased with the performance. My initial apprehension came from his decision to yell out the top notes of his first song instead of covering, which led me to fear that it was out of his range - a fear that was soon allayed by "Where's the Girl?" The supporting cast, especially the League, gave a strong foundation, though I could have asked for a little more grace from the ladies in the opening number.

The staging was skillfully handled in a round theater, though I would advise anyone rushing to catch closing weekend to arrive early and snag good seats on the side you enter. There is a slight bias in the direction of action, and having sat in the back, I would choose the opposite side if I could see it again. That being said, I would definitely see this performance again, and I highly recommend that you hurry before tickets are sold out for closing weekend.

Delightful, colorful, clever production with Glendale Center Theatre's usual attention to beautiful costumes, and wholesome, talented professionals. Imagine a sweeter, simpler, and more family oriented Les Mis, with clever and pleasing (but not brilliant) music/lyrics. The leads are all excellent, particularly the villain Chauvelin, often hilariously referred to as "Shovelin'" but Percy and Genevieve were delightful as well. Highly recommended for family entertainment - my 87 year old mom was thrilled, and people of all ages packed into the seats, giving the show a standing ovation. Only one more weekend, and I'm sure it will sell out. Long at nearly three hours, but consistently entertaining and a winner.

I’m not a fan of musicals so my review may be a bit biased, yet I found myself enjoying this production. If you are looking for something that the whole family would enjoy then this is it. As for me, it was a bit too ‘safe’ and predictable. Despite that, it still made for an enjoyable evening probably because the production was top notch and the cast’s voices were fantastic.

It was an all around well produced theatre production. GCT is a very intimate theatre in the round but they always accomplish large musicals with creative set pieces and good lighting effects. The show did not seem to have one weak performer with very strong leads and great voices. I would recommend this show to all theatregoers. An enjoyable afternoon at the theatre fo all.

Description

In 1905, a young Hungarian born writer named Baroness Emma Orczy (pronounced Or'-tsey) created an audacious and reckless hero, a "daring plotter" who used "tricks and games" against the cruelties of the French Revolution. In the best tradition of A Tale of Two Cities, the story mixed historical fact with dramatic adventure: as the Reign of Terror reaches its bloody climax in 1794, a brave band of Englishmen risk their lives to rescue the intended victims of the guillotine. Their leader is an enigmatic hero known only by his calling card: the red, star-shaped English wildflower known as the Scarlet Pimpernel.

Baroness Orczy's hero captured the imagination of the world, and has endured through the 20th century in many forms: in more than 10 sequels by Orczy herself, as a play, in dozens of movies and television adaptations (starring Sir Ian McKellen and Jayne Seymour), and now a sweeping and exciting musical by lyricist/book writer Nan Knighton and composer Frank Wildhorn takes the stage by storm!

Enjoy a swashbuckling evening of music and action in this story of high adventure and romance!
