On December 19, 1952 in Austin, Texas, country star Hank Williams made his last concert appearance in front of 587 audience members at the Skyline Ballroom before passing away suddenly at the age of 29. In There'll Be No Sad Songs: The Last Concert of Hank Williams, singer/actor Kevin Kratzke brings Hank Williams' final concert back to life through spot-on renditions of his legendary hits. Thanks to the magic of theater, Texas Family Musicals crafts an uplifting tribute to the country music icon who recorded 35 singles and had 11 chart-topping hit singles in his short life, including "Your Cheatin' Heart," "Hey, Good Lookin'," and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." The lead actor that played the adult Calloway was excellent. He sang and danced his way through the both acts and was very enjoyable to watch. The young actor that portrayed the young Calloway is also a very talented actor and singer. Unfortunately, although their names were announced, I didn't see them written down anywhere so I am not sure who they were or what else they have done. The theater was less than half full but they still gave a scinitillating performance to a very appreciative audience. If this does go to off-broadway, the actual play could do with a few tweaks as there was some "dead" time, although the first half seemed smoother than the first. Also the stage lighting could probably be improved a little. As an amateur production, it was great. The live jazz band really added to the show although it's a shame they weren't more visible. Both the venue and the actors superceded our expectations and we will definitely check out future productions.
