It's alive! Mel Brooks reunited with the creative team behind The Producers for this comedic reimagining of the Frankenstein story that became a Broadway hit. The musical follows young Dr. Frankenstein (pronounced "Fronkensteen") as he tries to complete his grandfather's work and bring a corpse to life. He is aided by the hunchbacked, bulging-eyed Igor, his beautiful lab assistant Inga, and the frightfully eccentric housekeeper Frau Blucher. Featuring an energetic cast and hilarious, catchy tunes like "Transylvania Mania," "He Vas My Boyfriend" and "Puttin' on the Ritz," Ritz Theatre Company's production of Young Frankenstein is scientifically proven to be a horrifically good time. Matt Reher, who directed the hysterical Great American Trailer Park Musical in last season's June Festival, is at the helm of this soon to be favorite and taking the role of Dr. Frankenstein is the multi-talented Ernie Jewel. It is an older theater building however it is very clean and the seating is comfortable. They have a small gift shop where the proceeds go toward the theater company and have a concession stand for intermission refreshments. The show was very creative and changes slightly each year. This year a local dance company participated with ballet, modern and tap and they threw "snowballs" into the audience (if you caught one, you received a special gift! I didn't catch one so I don't know what it was). They had to use a screen with a few prerecorded dialogues so two of the actors could make a quick costume change because they were playing multiple roles. I was impressed with the costume changes and the screen was creative but slightly took away from the flow of the scene. I wouldn't fault that artistic creativity though, just be open minded about it. The sound in the theater needs a little upgrading and there isn't a parking lot so finding parking is very difficult. I am glad I found discounted tickets because I think the regular pricing is slightly higher than I would spend on this semi professional performance. The acting however was great! Overall very good time and recommend to all ages. My husband and I really enjoyed it.
