A runaway hit at TheatreWorks' New Works Festival, The Great Pretender now receives a fully staged world premiere at the Lucie Stern Theatre. In this comic tale of friendship, love and letting go, a children's TV host is consumed with the passing of a cherished puppeteer. Evoking the small-screen shows that shaped the childhoods of so many, The Great Pretender moves beyond the painted sets and colored lights to discover that people (as well as puppets) need a helping hand. TheatreWorks kick-starts its new season with this bittersweet comedy from David West Read (The Performers). Learn More

This show had some really good points, and some not so great. First of all, it's a really nice venue. The theater itself is small and very comfortable, and seemed like any seat would probably be good. There was a nice lounge area outside with a small bar and refreshments. As far as the performance, we love "Hair" so it was fun to hear all our favorites. Several singers had outstanding voices, especially the actor who played Claude, and the actor who played the pregnant woman (can't remember her name.) Unfortunately, there was a lot of over-acting, and the direction didn't seem very professional, nor did the choreography. The orchestra could have been better also. On the whole we enjoyed the experience, since it's such a wonderful show, and brought back lots of memories. It did, however, make we want to hear the show recorded by actual professionals!
