This engaging sequel to Roger Bean's hit musical comedy The Marvelous Wonderettes picks up the action on Christmas 1968 -- a few months after the singing ladies' 10-year high-school reunion. The gals are entertaining at a holiday party, which is in danger of going down the chimney after Santa goes missing. This rocking Coastal Rep show brings back the signature four-part harmony of Missy, Suzy, Betty Jean, and Cindy Lou, with songs like "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," "Santa Baby," "Jingle Bell Rock," "O Tannenbaum" and "Mele Kalikimaka." I've been a Tom Lehrer fan for many years. In the early 70s I discovered my brother's old album and it fit into my Mad magazine and National Lampoon sensibilities. The songs seem a bit dated with focus on the A-bomb and the Soviet Union but all the snarky good fun holds up. The cast and crew were enthusiastic and fun and did the best they could to keep it current. I knew that Tom Lehrer lived in Santa Cruz and was delighted to hear that the director and he had worked together. I was hoping that Mr Lehrer might drop in... alas, no.
Thomas Andrew (Tom) Lehrer (born April 9, 1928) American songwriter, satirist, pianist, mathematician, and singer
Simply put, Tom Lehrer is a true genius, having earned a Bachelor's in mathematics from Harvard by the age of 18, and a Master's degree by age 19. However, his genious is even more obvious from his songs. To listen to them is to experience genius in an accessible, yet inimitable way. Lehrer has never shied away from controversy, or worried in the least about being politically incorrect. His songs were often in the vanguard of social morality, although he probably doesn't see himself as a social crusader. Known for his musical talents, mathematical brilliance and comedic gifts, Tom Lehrer has inspired a deep following, especially among the intelligentsia.
