Description
Apple Tree Theatre in Highland Park is proud to announce The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, a comedy by Charles Busch, as the third production of the season.
Marjorie Taub, the wife of a philanthropic allergist, is engulfed in a life crisis in this critically-acclaimed comedy. With her children grown, her beloved therapist recently deceased and her mother incessantly needling her, she finds herself in an empty nest without much interest in anything. Her spirits soar when a fascinating and incredibly worldly friend from her childhood suddenly appears on her doorstep. The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife is a deliciously devious social satire that won the Outer Critics Circle John Gassner Award in 2000 and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play.

This side-splitting comedy features a star-studded cast with Paula Scrofano as Marjarie Taub and John Reeger as her husband, Ira. Renee Matthews, who recently appeared in the award-winning role of Jeanette in The Full Monty, portrays the supposedly ailing, meddling mother, Frieda. Hollis Resnik is the free-spirited visitor, Lee. Vishal Patel is Mohammed, the helpful doorman. Kurt Johns returns to Apple Tree Theatre to direct The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, after having directed the popular, well-received Vincent in Brixton. Set designers are Richard and Jaqueline Penrod, costume design by Elizabeth Powell Shaffer, lighting design by Jackie Reid and props design by Micky York.
