Third tells the story of a college professor whose well-ordered life is thrown into disarray when she accuses a student, an outwardly stereotypical jock nicknamed "Third," of plagiarism. In challenging the student, she is forced to question her aggressively feminist ideology, standards and family relationships, bringing the play's central theme - the danger of becoming that very thing you have been battling against - full circle.

More Information About Third

Description

The title refers to the nickname of Woodson Bull III, a student at a prestigious East Coast liberal arts college. Surrounded by students coming out as gay or vegan, he is considered a “retro heterosexual.” Third gets off on the wrong foot with his Shakespeare professor, Laurie Jameson, when he says he can't attend a screening of a film of King Lear because of a wrestling meet. When Third turns in a paper that appears to be the work of an advanced scholar, Laurie accuses him of plagiarism. Third claims that he did in fact write the paper, accusing her of harassment and reverse discrimination.

Defined by its dazzlingly smart dialogue, crackling wit, intelligence and wryness, the play is true evidence of what made Wendy Wasserstein one of the most prominent female playwrights of the last 20 years.
