The 10th annual LA Dance Invitational takes place under the stars at the Ford Amphitheatre. Featuring performances by 11 choreographers from Los Angeles and New York, the works are all LA premieres and feature styles ranging from jazz to ballet, modern and tap. Yvonne Mounsey, director of the Westside School Ballet and a former principal dancer for the New York City Ballet, will accept the Stanley Holden Award for Distinguished Teaching.

It was dance numbers by students. The only people who would enjoy it were those who had a connection to students, schools or organizations. My wife and I left at intermission.

Description

This year, the Los Angeles Dance Invitational showcases the choreography of dance makers from Southern California and New York. All the works are new to Los Angeles and represent styles from ballet to modern and tap to lyrical jazz.

The program includes:

Marie de la Palme, MotionTribe – “Museum” featuring Fabienne Levenson, Melissa Sandvig, Ben Sayles, Marica Pendjer, Evan Strand, Evan Swenson.

Lula Washington, Lula Washington Dance Theatre – “Urban Man” (reprise of a two-man duet performed in the inaugural LADI).

Malathi Iyengar, Rangoli Dance Company – “Gifts of the River” featuring Lakshmi Iyengar and Sandhya Rajan.

Adam Parson, Commonality Dance Company – “Fend” featuring Ragon Miller, Hannah Jade Hightower, Candis Fox, Arody Trujillo, Michael Stein, Joe Beauregard and Chris Fedun.  

Holly Rothschild, Invertigo Dance Theatre – “Those Two” featuring Greg Barnett and Alexa Karshner (with live music by String Theory).

Steve Zee, LA Ironworks – “Steve Zee/Taps & Pandeiro.”

Nick Ross, Nicholas Andre Dance (New York) – “…and again” featuring Tommy Scrivens and Trista Jennings (duet) and Cat Cogliandro (solo).

Sara Silkin, Paradox Dance – “Au Suivant” featuring Jonthan Corps, Kelli Mckee, Samantha Mohr, Shane Raiford, Zak Schegal and Sara Silkin.

Lorin Johnson, Body Current Dance – “Elegy (What Rises Can Fall) featuring Kimberley Hannah, Kathryn Lung, Angela Mattern, Estela McNaughton, Jessica Stover, Maria Tolbert, Stephanie Yonkovich.

Denai Lovrien – “Limitations Resolved” featuring Ellie Hausman.

Laura Karlin, Invertigo Dance Theatre – “Saxy” featuring Toby Karlin and Jess LeCheminant (this performance will be on the entrance to the venue and includes live music.

Additionally, Yvonne Mounsey will accept the Stanley Holden Award for Distinguished Teaching. She is a renowned ballet dance teacher and director of the Westside Ballet School in Santa Monica. Mounsey was a principal dancer for George Balanchine and the New York City Ballet, as well as Massine’s Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and de Basil’s original Ballet Russe. The honor is named after one of the finest character dancers in Royal Ballet history. Holden was a committed supporter of and inspiration to the LADI.
