A classic novel gets a hip-hop spin: Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 and real-life experiences inspire this story of four people who dare to create in a time when artistic expression has been outlawed. Set to a backdrop of infectious grooves and head-bobbing beats, the show includes performances by RhetOracle Dance Company, Culture Shock San Diego, and members of KABA Modern and the Jabbawockeez (recent winners of MTV's "Randy Jackson presents America's Best Dance Crew").

Seriously? A tagline?

It's not quite what we were expecting (a professional dance company's adaptation of Fahrenheit 451), but what we got was really special. You can tell a lot of heart went into the show. It was put on by the Culture Shock LA Dance Troupe which is a community organization that teaches at risk kids of varying abilities and ages hip hop dance. Awesome, right? The choreography was innovative and the kid’s performances were moving. Overall we had a blast.

Worth it on the basis of being a "patron of the arts" or a parent of one of the performers. Otherwise, too amature for a Friday night adult date.

More Details About This Event:

A Beautiful Struggle tells the story of four individuals who dare to create in a time when artistic expression has been outlawed. It is their determination to use art as a method of overcoming individual adversity that gives rise to a revolution. A painter, a dancer, a singer and a poet--each one is fundamentally different than the other, but as they fight for the freedom of artistic creativity, their shared passion for the arts creates a unity that promotes understanding.

Inspired by the real-life experiences of local individuals whose lives have been inexorably changed by the arts, this original work uses the raw edginess of hip-hop dance, music, art and spoken word to bring their stories to the stage.
