This is a minimalist staging, which draws attention to the quality of the script, songs, choreography and performances. The book and the songs are exceptional -- hence the Pulitzer -- and the choreography was tight. But the performances were a little overwrought, in my opinion. Maybe it's because we were seated so close (thank you Pantages!!) but everything seemed a bit over-acted, while the singing, conversely, was kinda underwhelming. Having said that, the actors who played Val, Cassie, Sheila and Paul delivered stand-out performances.Written on Jun 07 2010
