All in all, Aloha Fest! was a delightful event held under perfect skies at the outdoor John Anson Ford Amphitheatre. The opening act was a young Josh Chang who charmed us with his wily falsetto singing and perfect stage personality, followed by Tini Grey, more mature, but with a loyal following in the audience. Both singers sang songs in both their native island language(s) and in English. Tini Grey was accompanied by a great steel guitarist and a young enthusiastic percussionist with the most intriguing "drum" kit I've ever seen.

The headliner, of course, was Amy Hanaiali'i, a hard name to pronounce, but an accomplished singer very easy to listen to. The bulk of Amy's songs were sung in Hawaiian, with a few excursions into English-language standards. Amy has an accomplished female falsetto voice and an even better stage presence. Her accompanying band were all very, very good and there was a sense that they all enjoyed what they were doing on stage.

The house wasn't sold out, which is a pity, but those that did attend were obviously long-time fans of Amy and of Hawaiian music of any type. All in all, except for the occasional LAPD helicopter cruising directly overhead, it was an exceptionally nice evening. I hope for more of the same in the future.
