It's 1977, and 15 year-old Horace Poore is trying to make sense of the tumultuous events surrounding him -- and the tumultuous events within him. Horace's sexual awakening is hastened by images of Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz and former pageant queen/orange juice promoter/anti-gay crusader Anita Bryant in this unconventional look at a young man's coming-of-age.

Hit Rock Musical HAIR Returns to Hollywood

Full Price:
$40.00
Our Price:
$20.00

With spirited music and colorful characters, HAIR remains an audience favorite, long after its original Broadway debut in the '60s. Indeed, the 2009 revival cast recording was Billboard's top-selling Broadway album. High-energy inspirational songs like "Aquarius," "Let the Sun Shine In," "Good Morning, Starshine" and "Easy To Be Hard" continue to stir theater audiences as they witness a "tribe" of politically-active New York City friends searching for answers in turbulent 1967. Though the long-haired bohemian companions may look different in style from today's youth, they face the same essential struggle to separate from their parents, define themselves in society, and stand by their personal beliefs in the face of pressure to conform. Award-winning production company theTRIBE performs this electrifying musical, whose original cast recording was America's top-selling album for 13 weeks. Learn More

I thought the premise of the play was good and I felt all the actors did a great job in their roles. Some of the issues did touch me as I also experieced the same themes in my life. I would recommend to people if they are having issues with idenity and self love. I would say that I could not absorb myself into any of the players and felt that the play dragged on a bit but otherwise enjoyed the evening

I hope I will get a chance to see it again and bring friends. A really touching and funny coming of age/coming out story that avoided cliches and was bolstered by an extremely talented cast. Not a weak link in the cast, most notably Wyatt Fenner as Horace and Nick Ballard as the hot Coach. A strong script and effective set and lighting design made my second experience at West Coast Ensemble (first was the funny and quirky "Miss Witherspoon") a postitive one. I look forward to their next production!

I heartily concur with all the other reviews (except one). This was a thoroughly enjoyable play and definitely one of the best productions I have seen this year. Well written, directed and performed. Congrats. West Coast Ensemble.

I enjoyed the actors(promising),and the over-all effect of desperation and hope. It's true! The time period has changed but not the pain for some or the effect of it. Gays are used to adversity. We tend to make the best costumes for Halloween!

Description

By Brian Christopher Williams

Directed by Richard Israel

An energy crisis, an unpopular war and the fight for equal rights for gay Americans.  Sound familiar?  Opening on August 21st will be the west coast premiere of Brian Christopher Williams' Anita Bryant Died For Your Sins.  It's 1977, and 15 year-old Horace Poore is trying to make sense of the tumultuous events surrounding him -- and the tumultuous events within him, as his sexual awakening is hastened by images of Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz and former pageant queen/orange juice promoter/anti-gay crusader Anita Bryant.  Nudging him along his journey to self-awareness are his idiosyncratic parents, his draft dodging brother, and his dreamy gym teacher.  This lyric comedy is an unconventional look at a young man's coming-of-age set against the cultural flashpoint of the early 1970s.
