Hit Rock Musical HAIR Returns to Hollywood

With spirited music and colorful characters, HAIR remains an audience favorite, long after its original Broadway debut in the '60s. Indeed, the 2009 revival cast recording was Billboard's top-selling Broadway album. High-energy inspirational songs like "Aquarius," "Let the Sun Shine In," "Good Morning, Starshine" and "Easy To Be Hard" continue to stir theater audiences as they witness a "tribe" of politically-active New York City friends searching for answers in turbulent 1967. Though the long-haired bohemian companions may look different in style from today's youth, they face the same essential struggle to separate from their parents, define themselves in society, and stand by their personal beliefs in the face of pressure to conform. Award-winning production company theTRIBE performs this electrifying musical, whose original cast recording was America's top-selling album for 13 weeks. Learn More

What a wonderful production of this (often underappreciated) Sondheim masterpiece! I'm so glad I had the chance to see it. I look forward to future productions at the El Centro Theatre if this is the level of quality I can hope to expect.Written on Oct 01 2008

A moderately good performance. Bright spots: Shannon Stoeke was terrific as the Proprietor, a role that is usually forgettable or awkward in the hands of a lesser actor. Shannon played the role to the hilt and won over the audience. Philip Anthony D'Amore was a stand-in for Zangara, and did an excellent job (his performance as Charles Guiteau in a previous production was even better). Larry Lederman made Leon Czolgosz more believable than in other productions I have seen, and was well-cast. Also of note was the instrumental accompaniment, which appeared to be a surprisingly varied one-man-band. Set design was innovative. Sour notes: The lighting was terrible; actors were in shadow much of the time, apparently too far upstage or slightly misplaced. The El Centro Treatre obviously has all the limitations of a tiny working space, as it is little more than a cramped shack (although the mini-lobby has been elegantly decorated), but still, much could have been done to improve the lighting. I also felt the pace of the drama needed to be tightened, there were a few moments that seemed to drag. Some acting and singing performances were less than stellar, but none were awful. As a whole, it was a mediocre performance redeemed by Shannon Stoeke and supported by the other above-mentioned bright spots.Written on Sep 28 2008

More Information About Assassins
Description
From the theatre company that brought you award-winning productions of Sunday In The Park With George, Merrily We Roll Along and Company comes Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's bold, surreal and darkly humorous Assassins. This Tony award-winning musical is Sondheim at his twisted best — a musical exploration of nine individuals who assassinated or attempted to assassinate the President of the United States . From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, this controversial and ultimately American musical takes us on a roller coaster ride in which one man's American dream becomes a nation's nightmare
