This is a very interesting interpretation of one of the best musicals ever, done with a 360 seating arrangement and the action in the center. Having seen Big River in several theaters before, I wasn't sure how they could pull it off this way, but they did. I would say the biggest advantage is that is gives the show a much more intimate feeling.Written on Sep 25 2009
I can't say this was the best production I've seen of Big River, but it is still an great one. Some of the actors were amazing and even those who didn't quite make that grade were still very good. The entire show was well cast and you feel that there are more cast members than there actually are.
Some of the directing choices seemed to gloss over some of the opportunities for poignant moments, but overall I thought the show was well put together and the 360 arrangement was used to it's fullest potential. (Although as a fan of Big River, I was bummed that they cut out one song - I, Huckleberry, Me - but I understand the reasons I suppose.)
This is one of my all time favorite shows and the Actor's Co-op did a great job of bringing it to life. I laughed a lot and was moved a lot - near the end of the show, I was holding back tears - that is the mark of a great show!
I took my friend who had never been to a musical before and he loved it - as he said "It wasn't what he expected a musical to be." And that's a good thing! :-) This is unlike any other musical you'll ever see and this is a really good production of it, so go ahead go see it - you won't regret it!

Staging was excellent and made for a very intimate theater experience. Overall, the performances and the vocals were excellent, except that I felt the lead (Huck Finn)was weak ... he did not seem as comfortable in his part as the others in the cast who were wonderfully real, and especially contrasted against the second lead (Jim, the runaway slave)whose performance and vocals were strong and moving. I agree with another reviewer who indicated that what should have been some of the most poignant parts of the play were downplayed; the comedy overshadowed some of the most important lesssons of this piece.Written on Oct 26 2009

This was my first experience in this venue and with this company and was my second time with "Big River." I thought the production was great! I especially liked the entertainment value of staging it "in the round" and felt that it was handled very well that way.Written on Nov 16 2009
I had read the posted reviews, so I wasn't completely surprised by some aspects, although I have to say that I thought the guy who sang "Huck" was fine -- not the strong, commanding voice of "Jim" (which was magnificent, by the way), but appropriate to the youthfulness of his character. His acting was superb, as well, and I thoroughly enjoyed his performance.
The rest of the cast was wonderful, so it is hard to say whether the slave choir or the Duke and King were more impressive, but they were all great!
A great actor who I would have enjoyed seeing more of (had the script called for it) was the guy who played Tom Sawyer. He was very entertaining and supremely believable.
It was my second chance to see this musical and I enjoyed this one much more than the previous, fully-staged version. I think the singing and the "in the round" staging were the difference.

A delightful production with clever staging, extraordinary voices and good acting, esp. the two shisters. The theatre's innovative 360 arrangement created a marvelously intimate setting.Written on Oct 12 2009
