Aaron Copland's Pulitzer Prize-winning Appalachian Spring, commissioned by choreographer-dancer Martha Graham, headlines this Los Angeles Philharmonic performance at the Hollywood Bowl, which also includes Maurice Ravel's Mother Goose suite and Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto. Conductor Ludovic Morlot will bring to life Copland's orchestral suite, which brings to mind images of majestic American vistas. The evening opens with Ravel's interpretation of the magical world of fairy tales, and continues with one of the most popular 20th-century concertos, Barber's Violin Concerto, featuring Simone Porter. The night culminates with a breathtaking new fireworks display. Learn More
Dont be lazy, pack a nice picnic, and never forget the wine-it is a must!!! A nice picnic experience is as important as the event itself...so bring plenty of food, cheeses, crackers, anything that will make your stay enjoyable. Come early, a good picnic should last at least an hour and a half. Our Concert started at 8pm, and we were sitting already at the picnic table at 6, after parking and collecting our tickets (30 mins). Note that the picnic areas are closed 15 min before the event start.Los Angeles Philharmonic: All Mozart dining • Aug 22 2014 star this tip starred

The Bowl is always wonderful, of course. That said, this was a very special concert. Gaffigan is talented and Grimaud is simply masterful at the piano. Her encore was especially terrific -- can anyone reading this identify the piece?
Los Angeles Philharmonic
James Gaffigan, conductor
Hélène Grimaud, piano
Beethoven: Coriolan Overture
Strauss: Don Juan
