I could not understand a word of any of the songs I heard being played, which was okay when I was in Rio De Janiero, but for Hollywood, California I thought it was absurd. This was primarily an English-speaking audience. They could have at least given us overhead subtitltes. What a good waste of my time and my $20 parking fee. The picture on the advertising is a bit deceptive, the event did not have near enough costumed performers. The best part for me was the tri-tip that was prepared by the restaurant in the back of this dimly/poorly lit event. The main showroom didn't have any kind of air-conditioning going so it was horribly uncomfortable and the room was barely even half full. I ended up leaving early because I couldn't hardly breathe in there. Even at this discounted price, I still feel very ripped off!!!

It was just Ok, not the extravaganza I had expected, especially considering the expensive ticket price (yes, even at a discount). There was, apparently, seating available at the outrageous price of $65.00 per chair, although Goldstar made no mention of it. Tables, as well, God knows how much they went for but it would have been nice to have the option. The drinks were outrageously expensive and the staff would not let you catch a breath without ushering you into the main floor where it became clear there were WAY fewer people than they may have expected, it was only half full. Most people were standing watching the stage, not much dancing. It should have been clear that it was a "watch the performance" type of event, rather than the organized mayhem of a true carnaval, but I guess that is to be expected. The dancers were gorgeous and the samba, very good. A couple of the musical acts did not really seem fit for a carnaval, as their music (while good) did not seem danceable enough to me. At best, I will call it underwhelming.

We arrived a little after eight o clock and the first eventing's performance did not begin util 9:30 p.m. There were no chairs for a person to sit; one had to wander aroung aimlessly through a crowd of aging, poorly dressed women and voyeurs snapping pictures while, the women were dancing,
it was the most boring event that I have ever attended with Goldstar.
My advice to the promoters, get the crowd more involved so that we may be active particpants in the event. Liquor can only stave off the pain of bordedom and temporarily deminished the fact that $100.00 wasted for the night

Katia Moraes and Pure Samba performs a perfect blend of dynamic harmonies and exhilarating rhythms, the best of Brazilian Carnaval. The band enchants audiences with the richest sounds of Brazil; a mix of samba, marchinhas (traditional carnaval sambas), pagode, and frevo. Katia was recently nominated for a Brazilian Press Award. Her energetic presence is beautifully complimented by the explosive power of percussion, and outstanding keyboards, guitar and bass.

Nation Beat, the wonderful Brazilian / US roots band from Brooklyn. They have a fantastic singer, Liliana Araujo, who is classically trained and was a winner of Fama, the Brazilian 'star search' show. Willie Nelson heard their CD and invited them to play at Farm Aid! That was an incredible experience... and just goes to show they are a group performing at a very high level. amazing live, they finish their sets with a thrilling maracatu percussion breakdown. LA's irrepressible Viver Brasil Dance Company will perform the special Maracatu dance which parodies the Portuguese royal court of the Baroque period and enacts a pre-colonial African tradition, parading the calunga, a special ritual doll representing tribal deities. This longstanding ritual dance is a prime example of in-your-face Carnaval revelry!

The sinewy Samba Show Dancers, crown the party offering a visual feast with extravagant performances of samba, frevo, axé, and capoeira, a traditional martial arts/acrobatic dance. The ensemble of 15 dancers radiates with sheer energy and passion. Master of Ceremonies of the carnaval is dancer/choreographer Ayanna Bahiana.

Hollywood Palladium Brazilian Carnaval 2009 will simulcast the Carnaval LIVE from Brazil on the big screen throughout the event, courtesy of Dish Network and TV Globo (Brazilian's main TV Channel). Patrons will experience the connection with others celebrating miles away from Rio. A trip to Rio de Janeiro will be given away. Costumes encouraged!
