Described by LA Weekly as a "scintillating domestic comedy," Caught opens in the summer of 2008, a week before Kenneth and Troy's long-awaited Malibu beach wedding. But their bliss is threatened when Kenneth's long-estranged, socially-conservative sister, Darlene, shows up unexpectedly with a suitcase full of secrets in tow. As all hell breaks loose, Caught provides both laughter and tears and, says Broadway World, "triumphs as a genuinely riveting, enjoyable piece of living theater."

Caught! is a great play, good acting, great story--as other reviewers said, makes you cry, laugh & comtemplate life. Zephyr is a great venue-cozy, intimate, nice lobby with complimentary coffee/tea & tables with candles/linen to sit at during the break--made a great date night with my partner even with the rain pouring down.

This review is gonna sound like I am a press agent, and swear I am not. Just someone who loves theater and goes to it frequently here in LA and elsewhere. Another fantastic production at the Zephyr. Nick Degruccio is one of the best directors in LA and this show is on par with his best. Well written, moving, funny and insightful. The show could not be more timely. It is not just a show about gay marriage. That is too simplistic of a description. It is a show about families in all their forms. The cast was excellent, led by the recent addition of Mackenzie Astin. The night I saw it, Sara Stuckey who understudies for the character Darlene went on, and was simply fantastic. Michah McCain gave a comic and tender performance and Bill Beinbrink and Richard Jenik were wonderful and real in their portrayals. But a special mention must be made of Amanda Kaschak, who's sweet and beautiful Krystal won over the audience with a character who gives us all hope for the future of changing attitudes. She possibly stole the show (in a great way). I took a friend and she loved it as much as I did. Set was very effective in such an intimate theater. I hope shows like this remind people that there is such amazing quality theater in Los Angeles. LA is not thought by others to be a "Theater Town", and that is a shame. On any given night, whether it is at a 99 seat and under theater or the Music Center or Pantages, there is some amazing theater offered here. Hopefully it gets extended again, becasue I would love to bring more friends to see it.
"Caught" could be playing at a much larger theater, and I have no doubt it will be soon, if not adapted for a movie first! Steller work, all!

Description

Over the past several years, the debate over same-sex marriage has split the country, deeply divided religious communities, and galvanized American politics. Directed by Nick DeGruccio, Caught, a world premiere play by David L. Ray, centers around the upcoming wedding of Kenneth and Troy, a committed gay couple living in Los Angeles. Only days before the event, Kenneth's estranged and culturally-conservative sister, Darlene, and her daughter unexpectedly visit from Georgia. Caught explores the meaning of "marriage," and how a family can find a way to meet in the middle while navigating long-standing religious values and staying true to their core beliefs.

Caught squarely earns both its laughter and its tears and, says Broadway World, “triumphs as a genuinely riveting, enjoyable piece of living theater.”

Writer David L. Ray is an acclaimed emerging playwright whose previous works have been produced nationwide, including the historic Cherry Lane Theatre in New York, Actors Theatre of Louisville, and the Marilyn Monroe Theatre in West Hollywood.

Nick DeGruccio is a multi Ovation, LADCC, and Garland Award-winner for Best Director. He has helmed productions at other prestigious theaters, including South Coast Rep, The Colony Theatre, Laguna Playhouse, Pasadena Playhouse, The Rubicon, Cabrillo Music Theatre, Musical Theatre West, Performance Riverside and more. He is the artistic director of the acclaimed Havoc Theatre Company.
