The historic Egyptian Theatre in the heart of Hollywood hosts a double-feature screening of the films Play It as It Lays (1972) and The Projectionist (1971). Director Frank Perry (David and Lisa) delivered many edgy psychological classics, and none is more deserving of rediscovery than Play It as It Lays, the rarely screened adaptation of Joan Didion's bestselling novel, with a screenplay by Didion and her late husband, John Gregory Dunne. Tuesday Weld is at her best as fiercely intelligent Maria, an ex-model on the verge of a nervous breakdown. In-the-closet producer Anthony Perkins is her only friend and Adam Roarke is her estranged director-husband trying to jumpstart his career out of the biker-film ghetto. It's a scathing portrait of Hollywood in the early 1970s. In The Projectionist (1971), director Harry Hurwitz presents the story of a lonely film projectionist (Chuck McCann) who spends his life daydreaming that he's superhero Captain Flash. His imaginary persona takes him and the audience on a series of adventures that alleviate the boredom of his daily existence. Rodney Dangerfield made his feature-film debut as the projectionist's boss in this cult favorite, which inventively uses movie clips and fake coming attractions (including a trailer for the end of the world) to convey its hero's fantasy life. Actor Chuck McCann makes an in-person appearance for a discussion between films.

I enjoyed Play As It Lays. Tuesday Weld and Anthony Perkins were wonderful in the lead roles.
