Description
30th Anniversary, Das Boot, 1981, Sony Repertory, 149 min.
Dir. Wolfgang Petersen.
Production Designer Rolf Zehetbauer in person
Adapted by Petersen from the 1973 German novel Das Boot by Lothar-Günther Buchheim, this riveting war film stars Jürgen Prochnow, Herbert Grönemeyer and Klaus Wennermann in the fictional story of a U-96 and its crew patrolling the waters during World War II. From the excitement of battle to the tedium of the fruitless hunt, Das Boot depicts the men serving aboard U-boats as ordinary individuals with a desire to do their best for their comrades and their country. Production designer Rolf Zehetbauer, who has designed almost 130 films, won the Oscar for Cabaret. In German with English subtitles.
Discussion following with designer Rolf Zehetbauer, moderated by Art Directors Guild President Thomas A. Walsh.
