American Cinematheque presents a double-feature screening of two films by iconic director Tim Burton and staring Johnny Depp. First is Ed Wood, and Burton's unabashed love for his subject makes this 1994 biopic of the director of "the worst movie ever made" (Plan 9 From Outer Space) a perversely uplifting experience, although in reality its title character's life was anything but happy. Johnny Depp portrays legendary schlock director Ed Wood as an enthusiastic hero of the cinema, a man whose love for moviemaking is so intense that it almost makes the quality of his work irrelevant. The screenplay, by Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander, is alternately hilarious and poignant. Next is Edward Scissorhands, Burton's wondrous modern fairy tale. His most heartbreaking and inventive film, it stars Johnny Depp as the boy with sharp blades where his fingers should be, courtesy of his inventor father Vincent Price (in his final film role). Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest and Alan Arkin play suburbanites who fall under Edward's spell in this utterly original Burton creation. Between films, Ed Wood writers Karaszewski and Alexander will be on hand for audience discussion.
