Eraserhead: Newly Restored Print of David Lynch's Film, with Tribute to Composer Peter Ivers
Egyptian Theatre (Hollywood, CA)
Rated 3.5 by 2 members who went.
The Egyptian Theatre is proud to present a newly restored print of Eraserhead, David Lynch's 1977 directorial debut. The absurd and nightmarish tale of Henry and Mary X made Lynch's reputation as a unique director. This screening celebrates the release of Josh Frank's In Heaven Everything is Fine, a biography of the late Peter Ivers, who composed music for the film. Frank will participate in a pre-film book signing and a post-film discussion.

Eraserhead
1977, Absurda, 89 min.
Filmmaker and artist David Lynch burst on the scene in the late ‘70s with this disturbing avant-garde masterpiece. Put-upon Everyman Henry (Jack Nance) – he with the Brillo hairdo – shambles resignedly through a dark, industrial urban landscape. When he joins Mary X (Charlotte Stewart) in a nightmare parody of working-class connubial bliss, and she subsequently gives birth to their mutant calf child, we realize there is no return ticket from this descent down the rabbit hole.
Peter Ivers collaborated with Lynch on the writing of "In Heaven," which Black Francis from the Pixies called the centerpiece musical number of Eraserhead. Lynch wrote the lyrics and handed them off to Peter after having visited his home and discovering they both shared a love of Fats Waller. Peter then wrote the music for the song on a little electric keyboard in the "spirit of Fats." The result is cult movie magic and a friendship that tragically ended way too soon. As Lynch said, "Peter and I had ‘In Heaven’ as our bond."
Tonight, American Cinematheque celebrates that collaboration, the life of Peter Ivers, his music and the release of his biography In Heaven Everything Is Fine with its author, Josh Frank. There will be a discussion following the film with Frank, as well as other guests (TBA).
