I really enjoyed this event. Unfortunately I arrived a bit late, traffic was insane on Saturday evening. A double feature of two great films is a total steal at less the price of a regular movie ticket.
The Egyptian theatre is absolutely beautiful and the seats are comfortable. It was a little shocking at how much the prints of the two films had deteriorated over the past twenty years. There were some sound glitches as well---but it was still worth it---and the quintessential classic movie going experience.

It would have been nice if there had been a discussion of the films beforehand---or maybe during the intermission. (Or if the time of the intermission had been announced.) Maybe it was before I got there. Parking at Hollywood and Highland was further away than I remembered as well.

I look forward to seeing what other films are offered---this is a great and affordable night out! And perfect as a date or solo.

Something to keep in mind: the concession stand is cash only.

Description

Wings of Desire, 1987, Janus Films, 127 min. Wim Wenders’ most fully-realized cinematic vision follows Damiel (Bruno Ganz), an angel having pangs of longing as he observes the lives of mere mortals in Berlin, specifically the beautiful, ethereal trapeze artist, Marion (Solveig Dommartin). Peter Falk essentially plays himself, a philosophical film and TV star (often addressed as "Columbo" by other characters!), who is making a movie in Germany and is one of the few people who can sense the presence of the invisible celestial spirits. An achingly beautiful and poetic meditation on life and what it means to be a human being. Wings of Desire won the 1987 Best Director award at Cannes. In German with English subtitles.

Edward Scissorhands, 1990, 20th Century Fox, 105 min. Director Tim Burton’s wondrous modern fairy tale – his most heartbreaking and inventive film – stars Johnny Depp as the boy with sharp blades where his fingers should be, courtesy of inventor father Vincent Price (in his final film role). Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest and Alan Arkin are the suburbanites who fall under Edward’s spell in this utterly original Burton creation.
