God's Gypsy explores the romantic and controversial life of the 16th-century Spanish mystic who became a Catholic Church reformer before she became a saint. Adapted from the award-winning Barbara Mujica's well-researched 2007 novel Sister Teresa, Coco Blignaut wrote and stars in the play, which follows Teresa from her days as a spoiled young girl sent to a convent, through her intense spiritual awakening, to her work as an influential theologian devoted to mental prayer, while also revealing her secret Jewish ancestry, risky political moves during the Spanish Inquisition and more. I could not have enjoyed this play more! It's funny, heart breaking, viscous and heart warming. You could hear a pin drop in the theater for the entire performance - except when they were laughing, very loudly I might add. The play is much, much than just another coming out story. It is about the rocky relationship of an adult father with his aging dad, a husband and wife who discover they're strangers, and a mother and son who are ripped apart by the son's sexuality. It really portrayed the different family values of different generations as well. This play is wonderful and enjoyable for all ages - from teens to senior citizens. And the acting is amazing!!! I could not recommend it more highly.
The show contains strong language and may not be suitable for those under the age of 17.
