Invasion! The Musical: "South Park" Meets "Little Shop of Horrors"!
Hudson Backstage Theatre (Hollywood, CA)
Rated 2.6 by 58 members who went.
Hilarious and satirical, this clever musical is reminiscent of "Little Shop of Horrors" and "The Rocky Horror Show," with a dash of "South Park" and Mel Brooks. On a hot summer night in 1952, the residents of Tucker County are at a moral crossroads. Suddenly, aliens attack! Faced with impending doom, the townsfolk seize the opportunity to do and say everything they've bottled up inside--and all hell breaks loose. Discrimination, social immorality and political hypocrisy are skewered mercilessly.

Although I knew what to expect going into this but I was still surprised at the outcome... I consider myself to be very liberal, but some of the contents were way off on a tangent and seemed like the author tried too hard to make fun of everything. There were times when I felt it was too ridiculous to laugh, but was managed to forced out a chuckle.

This show is something different I don't think I've seen..ever...a musical where the spoken lines seem to have been written by top notch comedy writer...Beyond funny this is a show that Bill Maher would love and so did I. Obviously a show with a cast of 24+ performers is a run is destined for bigger venues. If you can't get tickets to Wicked, this will be just as good...

not funny, not clever, not well-written. Songs weren't memorable, acting and direction very amatuerish. Nothing distinctive about the ensemble. Profanity was for shock value rather than motivated by story. Overall forgettable...

Horrible, in bad taste. Didn't get humor if that is what they were going after.. Actors were engaged and committed, but really felt money was wasted. Left at intermission which we never do.

It's unfortunate that so many very talented and beautiful people had such a lousy script to work with. There is a reason that shows like South Park are funny, and the writer failed to understand that. Unlike the musicals the show compares itself to (Little Shop and Rocky Horror), those shows have extraterrestial and sexual themes that never descend to vulgarity. Let's hope the actors get cast in something worth their talent the next time.

The story is very spotty and the music unmemorable. It is heavily borrowed from "South Park" but not even close to being as funny or clever and at times is just gross without being humorous.

I am sorry about writing this review, but I feel that potential audience members should know what is in store . I thought the cast tried very hard and I enjoyed the band. The use of the "barbershop quartet" was well done and they all had excellent voices. However, I have never seen such a tasteless show. From the crude racial and sexual remarks and the repulsive descriptions of bodily functions and deformities, the show continued to sink to lower depths. Is this supposed to be funny? I have never left a show mid-way, but I could not stomach it any further. What a major disappointment!

It has potential, but is more than crude. The language would be all right if it served the purpose of the play, but it seems that it borders on being disgusting at time, and goes beyond “over the top” in an effort to use such language as a comedy element.

We went with the understanding that the play would be of an adult nature and probably have foul language due to the over 18 notice that appeared just before I made the payment on line. However, nothing prepared us for the profanity, racism, and profane behavior of this show. It was not at all what we were expecting based on the advertisement. It was obvious that it was intended to offend as many people as possible. They succeeded. Be prepared to be insulted and offended. This should definitely have an "X" rather than an "R" rating.

This show is devilishly clever. It makes you laugh at all the things you know you shouldn't, but because it is done in such a sharply humorous way, one has no choice. I couldn't stop laughing and nor could the audience. This musical is groundbreaking, surely to go on to bigger and better stages in the future. It revolutionizes the stereotype of what a "musical" is. Kudos to this brave group of artists who are trying to break boundaries and contribute something truly original to the Los Angeles stage.

Nothing can prepare you for the depravity that is "Invasion:The Musical"...and I mean NOTHING. They cross every line in the book....in fact they leap over it and then beat it with a stick! But it was funny as hell and I laughed my butt off. Enjoy!

Not only is this show filled with raunchy sex jokes, highly attractive women (and National Guardsmen), and more cheap shots than a Mike Tyson boxing match, but it is also a clever lampooning of every musical theatre archetype we've all come to know and love. If the "Music Man"-esque barbershop quartet singing about aborted fetuses doesn't get you, the Fosse-inspired nurses swinging huge tampons during the "Toxic Shock Syndrome" number will. The only bad thing about this show is the jokes are so merciless and so many that you find yourself missing some jokes because you're still laughing at the previous ones. Guess you'll have to see it twice!

This show was not for me. Despite an exuberant, irreverent cast, the show was a series of vulgar toilet jokes for their own sakes. The attempt to tie crass vulgarity to tolerance and acceptance of differences was lame. (But then I'm 68 years old, from a different school of hard and soft knocks.)

I didn't know what to expect from this show, but it was hilarious! I've never laughed so much in a show. I recommend it to anyone, though this is definitely not for children.

Great fun and laughs - if you like vulgar, "racy" jokes, my friends and I thought it was a BLAST. Definitely not for the faint of heart. I hope to attend again before the show ends its hollywood run.
