Broadway Tour of Hit Musical Sister Act Comes to L.A.

Whoopi Goldberg presents the musical adaptation of her beloved comedy Sister Act. After earning rave reviews on Broadway, this hilarious and uplifting show comes to the Pantages Theatre. Legendary Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Little Shop of Horrors) penned the soaring music for this tale of a wannabe diva whose life is turned upside down when she witnesses a crime and is put into hiding in a convent. Now this free-spirited soul singer is shaking things up (much to the chagrin of Mother Superior) and teaching her fellow sisters to find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own. view more less of this reviewI was looking forward to great musical but ended up bearing thru it. Although the actor that play Alban was exceptional and shows his Broadway prowess , the play suffered due to Hamiltons acting and singing. For someone to have a lead role and one who's name is promoting the show , the producers may have wanted to highly reconsider how they were going to market this show. The house maid dialogue was very hard to understand and when Hamilton did his singing solos, I was very embarrassed to see that he could not keep in tune. The girl parts were ok but it would have been better if they could have made more visual transitions from male to female. The characters seemed tiresome.
star this review starred report as inappropriateSo you have background, I attend Broadway shows every month while in NYC. I purchased Goldstar tickets to this production presuming it would not be worth the top ticket price. Having said that, I was correct in my assumption. The production starts off with a pre-show 'comedy' routine from this tired, raggedy drag queen who required a clipboard to read off humorless insults to the audience. She'd do better working the Boulevard outside - as this sure set the tone for the lackluster production. George Hamilton, although a fantastic tanner, still lacks any ability to act or sing and had ZERO stage presence. I was amazed that the producers selected him to be the headline name. Perhaps it was to draw on that younger demographic every show needs to sustain (sarcastic). Sieber has a great voice for -most- of the first act, however even he had some difficulties in his big final act 1 number. The entire production was disappointing and we wound up leaving at intermission. Do yourself a favor and save the $20 parking and ticket price (discounted or other) and spend it instead on a drag show at a local gay club - you'll thank me later. Sorry folks - however its the absolute truth coming from an experienced theater goer.

star this review starred report as inappropriateIt's been a long time since I had a laugh out loud good time at a musical. The lead actors were amazing. George Hamilton is super charming and does a good job with this demanding role. Chris Sieber as Albin was amazing. I loved Chris' work in Shrek the Musical and especially in Spamalot, but here he OWNS the show. The 6 main dancers did an amazing job too. good scenery, costuming, choreography and the orchestra were all standouts too. This is a MUST see show. If you miss it here, see it in the OC or San Diego, but try to see it!
