The event was interesting, all the vendors had cards for each sake so you could take it and remember the ones you liked. I think the set-up could have been a little better as far as people lining up for tastings, but overall it was nice. The vendors except for 1 guy were all pleasant and informative.
This event took place at one of the ballrooms in the Marriott Renaissance Hotel on the corner of Highlands and Hollywood. The ballroom was dimly lit and there were different vendors setup around the perimeter of the ballroom. I agree that getting to the tables was difficult and that getting sake took awhile as each vendor poured from the bottle.
There was one vendor that had it right in my opinion and that was have the tastings pre-poured so that way you could just come up and grab one and leave if you didn't want to hear about the sake.
There was a sake class available but I didn't get signed up for the earlier ones only the last one at 10:30pm. By the time that rolled around, I didn't have any more interest to take it since the event was ending at 11:00pm.
They did have some appetizers provided by the hotel which helped keep the drunken munchies at bay. There was also a sushi restaurant Kabuku (Kubuku?) providing sushi rolls.
Overall me and my friends had a fun time. We all got rooms at the hotel so that we wouldn't be driving home drunk. There was no better feeling than to stumble from the ballroom, up the elevators, and into bed.
Best sake I had that night, TY KU white bottle. An elite Junmai Daiginjo sake. Needless to say, they ran out of it within the first hour since there were limited bottles (retails for $250/bottle). Early bird gets the worm.
I really loved that they didn't sell the sake, but were more interested in gettting people interested in it. I learned quite a bit, but not in the class we took. The speaker was very dry and gave too much background information and not enough about what to look for when tasting.
