In a writer's room filled with names like Woody Allen, Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner and Sid Caesar, they faced censorship, drugs, ratings and budget cuts armed only with one liners and a sharp wit. This was the perfect storm of comedy legends captured in a tremendously funny and poignant play by someone who was there: Neil Simon, the most prolific and successful comedy playwright of our time.

Very funny show! Strongs cast and direction. We went on opening night, so I'd imagine it will just get better.

Fast moving, loaded with jokes and wisecracks. The acting was excellent. Because of the large cast (8 players), the stage could have been larger to accommodate them. Luckily during our performance nobody sat in the front row thereby leaving extra wiggle room.

More Information About Laughter on the 23rd Floor

Description

During the birth of television, an amazing collection of comedy legends came together in one room. Neil Simon, the most prolific Broadway comedy writer of our time, worked with the likes of Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, and Woody Allen, for the television comedy icon Sid Caesar.

Laughter on the 23rd Floor tells the story of that legendary writer’s room. Putting together an hour and half comedy show that was the forefather of Saturday Night Live in a blaze of one liners, these writers dealt with everything from the drugs to censorship.

Faced with a network that pushed them to play to the lowest common denominator and a government full of fear and paranoia during the days of the McCarthy Trials, they fought with the only weapon they had, comedy. The jokes kept flowing through sagging ratings, budget cuts and even some tears.

This perfect storm of comedy was captured in a brilliantly funny and poignant play that is alive with the same issues we face today.
