Lovely show but the microphones were not working. When the guest spoke most of us couldn't hear. Better when singing but that's not good enough. Some people yelled louder but nothing changed.

This was a quality event the L.A. Jewish Symphony is famous for putting together. The pianist was extraordinary. The emphasis in this concert was lighter-weight fare, perhaps appropriate for summer, but I felt that not all the music was top-grade. The inclusion of the Sholem Aleykhem story seemed anticlimactic and incomplete--I liked the music, but it really had no point except to underscore obedience to parents without question as the highest virtue, and the surrender of dreams of a life devoted to music, which is hardly the kind of message I would want to see this organization promote! Some aural feedback from the Hollywood Bowl across the street was truly loud enough to be disruptive at times. May I be bold enough to suggest this: Stop with playing the national anthems already! I feel like we're living in some kind of hyperpatriotic authoritarian state when I go to a classical music concert (it happened at the Hollywood Bowl a couple of weeks ago also for a Dvorak/Beethoven program), and the first thing the orchestra hits you with is the Star Spangled Banner! I feel like I am being manipulated--socially pressured to stand and be or look and sound patriotic when I had come to this concert in the first place to clear my head of the national chatter that fills the air. And then after the US anthem, Hatikvah, the Israeli national anthem! Too much! We weren't at a political rally!
