With their marriage crumbling, a husband and wife acting team performing in a repertory company in Buffalo in 1953 try to keep things together long enough to get Frank Capra to cast them in his film remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel. But between a pregnant ingénue, and a surprise visit from their daughter, things go horribly and comically wrong. Moon Over Buffalo is written by Ken Ludwig who created the hit backstage farce Lend me a Tenor. Moon Over Buffalo ran for more than 300 performances on Broadway. Directed by Bjørn Johnson, Open Fist's production features fight choreography by Tony Award-winner B.H. Barry. The production features John Bobek, Benjamin Burdick, Norma Campbell, Katie Costick, John Lamay, Laetitia Leon, David Ross Paterson and Wendy Phillips.

Early and Often: Politics, Power in '60s Chicago at Open Fist Theatre

Full Price:
$25.00
Our Price:
$12.50

Amid the turbulence of Chicago politics in 1960, and with JFK's election hanging in the balance, a local politician makes his play for power in Early and Often. Written by Barbara Wallace and Thomas R. Wolfe (The Great Society), this dark comedy was a hit in its initial run at Chicago's Famous Door Theatre. Centered on Democratic Precinct Captain Art Ruck and set on Election Day, Early and Often takes a revealing, humorous look at the inner workings of corruption, posturing, politicking and the Windy City's infamous "machine" -- on both sides of the aisle and the law. In the mode of "Noises Off," this play is really quite delightful. The cast is good....and though the set creates some problems, it does provide quite good sight lines for the back stage gags.
Well worth seeing.

In response to the other reviewer: I'm not a crew member and I was laughing loudly. A farce needs an audience willing to participate in the silliness. And I am. If you are too and want something light with that endearing 50's simplicity, check it out. The fight sequences are quite professional. The leading man and lawyer are particularly strong.

What a blast! Not sure which show the first reviewer saw, but in the show I saw, the audience were the ones doing most of the laughing. If you like broad farce, this is perfect for you. Some performances are stronger than others, but overall, it's a good escape from the dreary world out there right now. -GK
