In "Shrinks," Maria E. Jenson's incisive new satirical comedy slated to open October 15 in a World Premiere engagement, life, love and the world at large are a big carnival. The show takes this premise literally as the visual metaphor includes a revolving stage (evoking a merry-go-round) with a barker and an exotic dancer.
At the heart of the story are an attractive and loving young couple who are currently experiencing some bumpy communication issues. Each seeks aid from his/her respective psychotherapists. The two docs, however, are a mother and son more neurotic than their patients. The shrinks compete in a dangerous game of one-upmanship that further imperils the relationship of the young couple in need and pushes them to the brink.
It's very loosely suggested that our young pair Harry and Greta are innocents lost in a dark, mysterious forest of therapy, with the two practitioners acting like sinister sorcerers----sort of a 21st Century Hansel and Gretel.
This is a comedy, however, and audiences will be rooting for the love of Greta and Harry to win through.
