Hit Rock Musical HAIR Returns to Hollywood

With spirited music and colorful characters, HAIR remains an audience favorite, long after its original Broadway debut in the '60s. Indeed, the 2009 revival cast recording was Billboard's top-selling Broadway album. High-energy inspirational songs like "Aquarius," "Let the Sun Shine In," "Good Morning, Starshine" and "Easy To Be Hard" continue to stir theater audiences as they witness a "tribe" of politically-active New York City friends searching for answers in turbulent 1967. Though the long-haired bohemian companions may look different in style from today's youth, they face the same essential struggle to separate from their parents, define themselves in society, and stand by their personal beliefs in the face of pressure to conform. Award-winning production company theTRIBE performs this electrifying musical, whose original cast recording was America's top-selling album for 13 weeks. Learn More

I wanted to like this play, for it was obviously a labor of love to the playwright, who was present at the performance and gave a short, pretty much unnecessary introduction at the outset. But by the end of the play I was amazed how sophomoric its political "insights" were, how featureless were its characterizations, and how uninventive it was, given the importance of its subject matter: how we deal with holocausts--Nazi, Turkish and American.

Three suggestions, should the author care for a rewrite someday: drop the shovel business, add a little bit more humor here and there, and fix the conclusion. No one in the audience knew the play was over.

Too many comments on too many historical and international situations makes it feel like you are sitting in on 5-10 different seminars on world events and the historical personality of countries. Needs much much more focus. Also gaps between scenes are too long---sometimes the stage goes dark and 30 seconds to a minute goes by before an actor comes back out---makes you think it's intermission or just plain pretentious, as in what I just said is really important so think about it while we leave the stage empty.
