Aaron Copland's Pulitzer Prize-winning Appalachian Spring, commissioned by choreographer-dancer Martha Graham, headlines this Los Angeles Philharmonic performance at the Hollywood Bowl, which also includes Maurice Ravel's Mother Goose suite and Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto. Conductor Ludovic Morlot will bring to life Copland's orchestral suite, which brings to mind images of majestic American vistas. The evening opens with Ravel's interpretation of the magical world of fairy tales, and continues with one of the most popular 20th-century concertos, Barber's Violin Concerto, featuring Simone Porter. The night culminates with a breathtaking new fireworks display. Learn More

If you have a chance to see Brian Setzer in concert, I highly recommend you go - he puts on a great show! I wasn't familiar with his music (other than his 2-3 big hits from his Stray Cats days), but his rockabilly & swing sound is so energetic and joyful that you don't need to know the songs to enjoy them. And you can never go wrong with a setting like the Hollywood Bowl, especially when there are fireworks at the end! The conductor, Thomas Wilkins (who is so charming and entertaining himself), and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra did an amazing job as always. The sound system is awesome, and thanks to the big screens, even the nosebleed seats aren't bad.
A couple of suggestions on Hollywood Bowl logistics: first, take advantage of the Park & Ride service if you can; they have multiple locations, and it's really worth it because parking is an expensive and painful process, especially when you're trying to get out (cars are stacked). Buy the P&R tickets online at least 2 weeks prior to the show - you can pay cash on the bus, but you have to wait for all the ticket holders to load up first, plus it's cheaper when you buy in advance.
Second - plan on doing a picnic; it makes the experience more fun, despite the pretty nice dining options onsite. The seats/rows are very narrow, so pack light and avoid heavier coolers etc. - even if you're seated on the aisle, it'll still be a pain to deal with. And avoid glass cups/bottles - I saw more than one break during the show.
You can't go too wrong w/ the Hollywood Bowl, particularly when a great act like Brian Setzer comes to town. Grab your food/drink (and a sweater for the nighttime chill), pack a little patience (you will deal with some lines and shuffling around), and get ready for a lovely evening!

Our first time to the Bowl - loved every minute of it! Great music, big screens for close-up action, amazing fireworks (how do they do that in those dry hills??) We didn't allow enough time to figure out the parking and lay-out - so come...continued
