This globe-trotting ensemble proves that praise knows no borders. With a history spanning more than 60 years, this Dakar, Senegal-based choir infuses American gospel spirituals with the styles and traditions of Pan-African music. The 15-member chorus and four traditional Senegalese drummers perform standards like "Amazing Grace" and "The Storm is Passing Over" while proving that praise is international by singing in each of their home country's four national languages. The choir, now led by music director Ambroise N'Diong, was founded in 1950 by UNESCO Ambassador Artist for Peace Julien Jouga as a means of creating harmony between Senegal's Muslim and Catholic cultures. The actors were difficult to understand, and neither my friend nor I could stay awake. We couldn't really figure out what was going on, so we left at intermission. We felt bad about it because we think the actors did a pretty good job.
