From A.R. Gurney, one of America's most prolific playwrights, comes The Middle Ages, a zany romantic comedy about a would-be free spirit whose turbulent individuality is in direct opposition to the stodgy world he's determined to escape. Set in the trophy room of a stuffy men's club, the play centers around the rebellious Barney, who's chafing against the narrow virtues of his family when he professes his undying love for Eleanor. Even Eleanor's marriage to Billy, Barney's brother, can't change how he feels. Over the course of 30 years, Barney and Eleanor's relationship evolves and, through a series of illuminating flashbacks, we learn that history only repeats itself when lessons are not learned.
