Ayn Rand's Courtroom Drama Night of January 16th at Huntington Beach Playhouse
Huntington Beach Playhouse (Huntington Beach, CA)
Rated 3.0 by 9 members who went.
This courtroom drama by famed novelist Ayn Rand (The Fountainhead) has been gripping audiences since its original Broadway success in 1935. Based on the 1932 death of Ivar Krueger, the Swedish "Match King," the factual evidence of the defendant's guilt or innocence is evenly balanced to make either verdict possible. The audience serves as the jury in this murder trial.

Four of us went and we really enjoyed it. Two of our group agreed to be on the jury so they got to sit in the jury box on the stage. Good acting, great stage design, loved the interaction with the audience!

Excellent acting from the cast. The plot rivialed the best of Agatha Christie but being an Ayn Rand piece it also had plenty of food for thought. Many of the ideas Rand would more fully devolpe in the Fountainhead and Atlas Surged were already present in the Night of January 16th.

Nice little theater--my first visit. This was a difficult play to do and they did a great job.

The production was very good with some excellent acting. Especially noteworthy was Candy Beck as the Swedish maid. I was hoping she would be called back to testify again! I also very much enjoyed "Guts" Regan, Karen Andre and the wife.
If courtroom drama (and some comedy) is for you, don't miss this production!

The acting was uneven, but strong performances were delivered by the actors who portrayed the housekeeper, the gangster, the prosecutor, the father and the widow. One actor whose testimony was critical to the guilt or innocence of the defendant spoke in a weird, unintelligible accent which I felt led to the surprise verdict. The set was well-done, making good use of the stage which included a jury box. The walls really looked as though they were made of marble!

More Details
This tense courtroom drama focuses on the untimely demise of money mogul Bjorn Faulkner, possibly at the hands of his former associate and mistress, Karen Andre. Weaving through a web of bad deals, cover-ups, betrayal and revenge, the prosecution and defense present their witnesses and their case, and then the audience decides the verdict.
