Grand and uplifting, Les Misérables is a powerful affirmation of the human spirit and one of the most popular musicals of all time. La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts presents a brand-new production of this tale of passion and revolution in 19th-century France, which won seven Tony Awards on Broadway and was made into an Oscar-nominated film. Ex-convict Jean Valjean's struggle for redemption and the young, innocent love of his adopted daughter Cosette and the student Marius are set against the tumultuous backdrop of the French Revolution. It's a celebration of the human struggle for love, justice and happiness in the face of hardship, carried forward on a gorgeous score, including the beloved songs "I Dreamed a Dream," "Do You Hear the People Sing?" and more. Great effort by this community theatre! With a large cast and quite a few children, producing this show is quite an undertaking. The sound quality was poor. Something happened with the microphones on Sat 1/8/11 and the actors voices couldn't be heard. I was already familiar with the book, music & lyrics of this show, but the material was new to others with whom I was seeing the show, and the poor sound quality and the varying "British accents" made it difficult to follow the storyline.
The costumes were terrific, as were the sets. This show isn't mounted very often, so we were happy to see it. The talents of the actors were quite varied. The actor who played Fagin was excellent. The actor who portrayed Nancy gave it her all, but there was not much in the way of "chemistry" between Nancy and Bill Sykes. The (child) actor who played Jack Dawkins aka "The Artful Dodger" is very talented and did a great job. The rest of the lead performances were so-so. I had higher hopes for the performances of the roles of Bill Sykes and Oliver. The ensemble actors worked really hard and did a great job.
If you choose to see this show, bring a sweater or coat as it was quite cold in the theatre. The volunteer staff members were really friendly and nice. Overall, it was a fun evening out.
