On stage now at London's National Theatre is Shakespeare's great psychological thriller, King Lear, directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes (Skyfall, American Beauty). Take a virtual trip oversees with this National Theatre Live broadcast of the performance starring one of the great stage actors of our time, Simon Russell Beale (Timon of Athens). Adapted to a contemporary setting, this production of Shakespeare's epic tragedy has been called "complex and potent" (Evening Standard) and "awe-inspiring" (Time Out). King Lear is the tale of an aging monarch whose descent into madness leads to upheaval among family and country as both are torn apart by the ambition and jealousy of his prideful daughters. It was very original & thought provoking. The program gave an excellent introduction regarding the dance and settings. This was very helpful and gave an understanding to appreciating the action on the stage. Unfortunately, the audience had a sufficient number of idiots who couldn't contain their rather loud laughter over the unusual moves. Next to me were a popcorn eater and a laughing hyena. Perhaps, they thought this was going to be a teen age flick.
This is the only West Coast engagement during the company’s U.S. debut tour.
