More Information About Tchaikovsky Spectacular
Description
There are few better ways to bid summer adieu than with Pacific Symphony’s “Tchaikovsky Spectacular”—a grand evening of music by one of the most beloved composers, plus the drama of cannons and fireworks! The Symphony concludes its Summer Festival 2007 with this concert packed with Russian music, led by guest conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto and featuring virtuoso pianist Alexander Korsantina.
“This concert is kind of a ‘Who’s Who’ of prominent Russian composers,” says Maestro Prieto, “with a program nicely balanced with extremely well-known and lesser-known works. Everyone knows Tchaikovsky—and we are playing perhaps his two most popular works. The audience will hear one of the most exciting pianists I know—Alexander Korsantia—playing Tchaikovsky’s ‘Piano Concerto No. 1,’ a breathtaking work and one of the first uniquely Russian piano concertos ever composed. And then there is Tchaikovsky’s heart-stopping and ever-popular ‘1812’ overture, replete with booming cannons and a vivid display of fireworks! Also on the program are a rarely performed work by Shostakovich; Borodin’s ‘Polovstian Dances’ from Prince Igor, an opera based on an old Russian war poem, ‘The Lady of Igor’s Campaign’; and perhaps Prokofiev’s most inspired work, Suite from Cinderella.”
Conductor/violinist Carlos Miguel Prieto is one of the busiest young conductors today. Currently serving as music director of the Xalapa Symphony Orchestra and the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, Prieto has guest conducted with the Dallas Symphony, Houston Symphony, Phoenix Symphony and many others. As a violinist, he has toured throughout Mexico, the United States and Europe. Prieto was named “Conductor of the Year” in 2002 by the Mexican Union of Music and Theater Critics.
Alexander Korsantina is known throughout the world as a pianist who plays with virtuosity and sincerity. He has performed all over Europe, Asia and the Americas, including with the orchestras of Louisville, Brazil, Bogota, Jerusalem and the City of Birmingham; the Georgian State Orchestra; the Kirov Orchestra; and the Israel Chamber Orchestra. He has won numerous awards including First Prize and Gold Medal at the Arthur Rubinstein Piano Master Competition and First Prize at the Sydney International Piano Competition.
