Dear Goldstar,

A warm summer night under the stars with a full moon rising up from behind Saddleback mountain set a perfect stage for an evening of music by Tchaikovsky at Verizon Wireless Ampitheatre in Irvine last Saturday.

My wife and I offered a pair of tickets to her parents in exchange for a picnic basket full of my mother-in-law's yummy food. The four of us arrived right at 6pm, picked up our will call tickets and were happily munching our pre-concert feast before the clock struck the half hour mark. Stretching out comfortably on blankets atop the grassy slopes of Verizon's picnic area, we dined and imbibed casually until it was time to amble up to our seats...a pleasant surprise, front row Terrace (not too shabby Goldstar!!!).

The downbeat promptly at eight commenced a truly enjoyable evening. Carl St. Clair wielding a wicked baton launched his PSO into the Coronation March, followed by the Piano Concerto #1, with guest soloist Joyce Chang. The Van Cliburn silver medalist was stunning in her royal blue dress and red hot fingertips. Ms. Chang played beautifully for almost thirty minutes and after receiving an extended hand from the audience, left the stage and brought us to intermission.

Refilling our glasses with more of the bubbly, we were blessed with eight selections from Swan Lake during the second half of the concert. As an added bonus, a pair of dancers accompanied the orchestra. Wonderfully choreographed, the man and woman brought the music to life through their very expressive ballet.

After a brief explanation from Maestro St. Clair regarding the origins of the now popular inclusion of cannon and fireworks accompanying the 1812 Overture (Arthur Fiedler added them when attendance was waning at the Boston Pops Summer Esplanade concerts) we were treated to the evening's finale. The piece that has always been the swan song of the PSO's summer series was beautiful from the beginning and bombastic at the end. Cannons and fireworks roaring into the sky marked the end of our most enjoyable evening. What a show!

I am looking forward to going to all the PSO's concerts next season...thanks to Goldstar!

Regards,
Ron Wells

Pacific Symphony, celebrating its 33rd season in 2011-12, is led by Music Director Carl St.Clair. The largest orchestra formed in the U.S. in the last 40 years, the Symphony is recognized as an outstanding ensemble making strides on both the national and international scene, as well as in its own burgeoning community of Orange County. Presenting more than 100 concerts a year and a rich array of education and community programs, the Symphony reaches more than 275,000 residents--from school children to senior citizens.

The Symphony offers a popular Pops season led by Principal Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman. The Pops series stars some of the world's leading entertainers, and is enhanced by state-of-the-art video and sound. Each Pacific Symphony season also includes Café Ludwig, a three-concert chamber music series, and "Classical Connections," an orchestral series on Sunday afternoons offering rich explorations of selected works led by St.Clair. Assistant Conductor Maxim Eshkenazy brings a passionate commitment to building the next generation of audience and performer through his leadership of the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra as well as the highly regarded Family Musical Mornings series.

The Symphony offers moving musical experiences with repertoire ranging from the great orchestral masterworks to music from today's most prominent composers, highlighted by the annual American Composers Festival. The Wall Street Journal said, "Carl St.Clair, the Pacific Symphony's dynamic music director, has devoted 19 years to building not only the orchestra's skills but also the audience's trust and musical sophistication so successfully that they can now present some of the most innovative programming in American classical music to its fast-growing, rapidly diversifying community."

In addition to its winter home, the Symphony presents a summer outdoor series at Irvine's Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, the organization's summer residence since 1987.
