Edmund is a newbie novelist struggling with his first book. Sweetie is a spoiled Upper East Side teen with a major lack of motivation. The two would never have crossed paths except that Edmund decides to support himself by tutoring rich kids for the SATs. The only thing he expected from the job was a lot of cash. What he didn't expect was to find his muse. The bratty but bright Sweetie manages to inspire him, bringing his characters (literally) to life. With a fun and energetic pop score, this new musical takes on the issues that every young person coming of age will recognize -- family drama, creative angst and romantic blunders -- with a wit and wisdom that will leave you smiling. As is always the case with the Village Theater, production values were top notch for this show. It's a new piece by a first generation American about the desperation of asylum seekers, The author did a good job of showing the ambivalence of the people making the decisions. Perhaps we were just tired on Friday night, but we found it awfully intense. I gave it just three stars because we felt the show was too over-wrought; it seems to need more balance.
