Three couples host Christmas Eve gatherings in their respective homes over three successive years. On the first holiday eve, "lower class" but very much up-and-coming Hopcrofts are in their bright new gadget-filled kitchen, anxiously hosting a small party for their bank manager and his wife and an architect neighbor. The following Christmas Eve finds the architect and his wife hosting a party in their now-neglected, untidy flat. The final Christmas Eve finds the the bank manager and his wife playing host in their large but clearly dated Victorian-style kitchen.
