Mandell Weiss Theatre (La Jolla, CA)
From the author of I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change and Over the River and Through the Woods, and the keyboardist of Bon Jovi, comes a rocking musical that immortalizes the man who spun the music of black and white American together for the first time. In 1950s Memphis, rock 'n' roll was taking over the airways, Elvis was a wannabe, and renegade DJ Huey Calhoun was on a mission to unite a divided country through music.

I took my 13 yr old Granddaughter with me And we both found it to be "awesome" to quote her.

"Memphis" is magic in talent, set, songs, and dance. It is not to be missed by those who remember rock n' roll's birth and those who need to be reminded of the musical gift from the African-American community. (Weren't James Brown and Elvis in the wings watching?) The audience was on its feet with applause song after song, dance after dance. Such talented performers kept our feet tapping!
Civil rights and civil wrongs were given fair treatment by the playwright even if the lead characters weren't given character depth in their story of interracial love in the South. Oh, those singing voices of the leads...those dancing feet and singing of the ensemble. Thanks to everyone, especially set design. "Memphis" in La Jolla. Life is good!

Very lively music & dancing. Orchestra was a little loud on some numbers making it hard to understand the lyrics. Professional produciton.

The leading actress and actor were phenomenal. The supporting cast were outstanding. We thoroughly enjoyed this!

Only go if you like rock n roll and want to feel good.

a joyous, exuberant production. not a weak member of the cast. the lead actors have unbelievable voices. the story is both old and timely. we had a great time.

Outstanding.

I thought that it would be about Elvis. It wasn't, but still fabulous!

Outstanding! Another straight to Broadway musical from La Jolla Playhouse.

I really enjoyed the show. The actors were very good.

Really great dancing and singing, a very talented cast. The play seemed a little long but remained entertaining.

Great night of entertainment.

I've been reading and hearing a lot about this new show. I went to the third premiere performance, and - overall - it was great fun and quite excellent. The director is still tweaking the show, and it shows, and does need a bit more work. That said, the voices, acting, dancing, and story were outstanding.

My husband and I enjoyed Memphis Blues. Singing was fabulous, the female lead and the male lead! I love dancing and this musical did not disappointment me. I've already recommended it to several friends.

Terrific production. We may want to see it again towards the end of the run

Fantastic production!! One you can see over & over!!!!
Don't miss it!!-

1st act was great. 2nd so so.

The voices were not as strong in the first half. The acoustics are abominal and the stage too small for eh dancers but he story line and the make ad female leads were tremendously enjoyable. It need a little more tugging on th eheart strings and a little more revening up of the music and it would really fly.

Show is full of energy, good performers and entertaining story! With some polish after previews, it should be a hit!
Memphis, 1950s...in the center of the radio dial, the airwaves are humming with the soda-pop tunes of Patti Page and Roy Rogers. But on the fringes of the dial--and in the hidden juke joints of the heavily segregated city--a new type of music is electrifying the audiences it reaches. Blues, R&B, and gospel are ushering in the irresistible sound of rock 'n' roll, and Huey Calhoun, a renegade white disc jockey, is determined to get it, and the people who make it, on every radio station in the country.
